Embracing a Curated Wardrobe.

A capsule wardrobe is a curated wardrobe with limited items of clothing that can be mixed and matched to create a variety of outfits. In our age of fast fashion and ease of access to clothing, the Pareto principle shows that most people wear 20% of their clothes 80% of the time, hence most of us find an overflowing wardrobe with ‘nothing’ to wear. There are a few different rules floating around in terms of exactly how many pieces this means. There is Jennifer L. Scott’s 10 item wardrobe (10 core items plus ‘extras’ to round them out), or Courtney Carver’s project 333 which comprises of wearing 33 items for 3 months.

I have been implementing a capsule wardrobe of around 10 core pieces for the last few years and have found many benefits including:

  • Ease in choosing an outfit in the morning since options are naturally narrowed down

  • Ability to splurge on higher priced and better quality items since I am buying less overall

  • Most of what I wear are my ‘favorite’ items as I have no room for ‘just okay’ items

  • Majority of my wardrobe is interchangeable making it easy to put together different outfits

  • Benefits to the environment from purchasing less and better quality

  • Less time spent shopping since the pieces I have curated are timeless and are less likely to go out of style

  • More space in my wardrobe so my clothes can ‘breathe’ - this also gives the feeling of a high end boutique. Much better than my previous wardrobe with items jammed packed that was more reminiscent of a sales rack

  • Clothing is not ‘forgotten about’ as I can see everything clearly
